John Jason McLaughlin

It just goes to show you that I am not the authority on the subject nor am I omniscient. This is a story that has eluded my notice for the past year and a half.

On Sept 24, 2003, 15-year-old John Jason McLaughlin shot two of his fellow students at Ricori High School in Cold Spring Minnesota. The victims were Aaron Rollins, 17, who was shot in the neck and died later that day in the hospital and the intended target Seth Bartell, 14, who was shot in the chest and head. Bartell held on for 16 days before passing away.

Here’s how the suspect was originally described back in 2003…

But lately, those who know McLaughlin said, he began to change. He seemed more withdrawn and didn’t want to come out to play. Some described him as intensely shy and self-conscious about his severe acne.

“It really was this summer that things seemed different,” Jess Phillips, 12, who lives about a block away, told the Star Tribune.

Neil Wackwitz, 15, who was perhaps his closest friend in the neighborhood, also told the newspaper said McLaughlin seemed to withdraw this summer.

Sullivan said she noticed lately that he didn’t seem to have many other friends. She wondered whether his small size or his acne played a role.

“Kids would tease him about that,” she said.

Wackwitz said he and McLaughlin used to play video or computer games or hang out. But lately, McLaughlin usually said he didn’t want to. He also started walking home after school instead of riding the bus.

Wackwitz said he felt bad but didn’t think anything was seriously wrong. He said McLaughlin never mentioned that anything or anyone was bugging him. In particular, he said, McLaughlin never complained to him that kids at school were picking on him.

Sullivan said that McLaughlin had mentioned to her that people were picking on him but that he didn’t seem too concerned about it.

But she said there were signs that something was amiss. During one of their long chats, she recalled, McLaughlin told her that he was being tested this summer for a split-personality disorder. She said he never mentioned it again.

Others also said that teasing may have been the motive behind the shooting. However…

If Jason McLaughlin brought a gun to school because he was tired of the teasing, classmates say they can’t figure out why he targeted Seth Barthell and Aaron Rollins.

Those two boys, according to Richter, were not among the kids who teased McLaughlin.

“I think his main target was some other kid,” he says.

In July of 2004, McLaughlin pleaded not guilty under the defense that he did not intend to kill Seth Bartell and that his mental state was in question at the time. Previously a grand jury had determined that Aaron Rollins was shot accidentally by McLaughlin.

McLaughlin was to be tried as an adult. His attorney appealed but in November of 2004, the appeal was denied. (Log in info)

And after almost two years the trial is finally starting to get underway.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this one.

If anyone has any more information that I missed please let me know.

  1. tis a shame. yet another youth about to be thrown in jail for life for ‘1’ stupid stupid mistake. All because of the way our law system works.

  2. Ok Edgar, it’s your lucky day. I actually allowed one of your comments because I’m curious to hear your response. Do you honestly think shooting someone in the chest then chasing them down again and shooting them through the brain is a “stupid mistake”?

  3. The fine line between one who fantasizes these things and one who acts upon them is not as big a jump as you think. . Yeah, instead of giving this kid psychiatric help and imprisoning for a reasonable number of years, lets just lock him up for life where he gets to bond with his cellmate, Gordo, whether he likes it or not (especially at night)

And I request an unbanning. I’m not a mutant, as you carelessly assumed back in your topic about ‘cowardice’ you simply misinterpreted my question.

  4. So let another killer loose on the streets. He shot the kid in the chest chased him down and shot him through the brain. That’s not a “stupid mistake”. That’s cold blooded murder.

    And as for your unbanning…um….no.

Back to the cornfield with you, mutant.

  6. Let me tell you what one family member of Seth’s thinks…..

The kid needs to go to prison, forever. Why would anyone
want to waste our tax payers time and dollars on a lost cause?!
Personally, I wish Minnesota had the death penalty.

The way our wonderful law system works has allowed this little monster
to remain in an institute since this happened. And the tax payers
    have picked up the tab.
What about some peace for the family?! Don’t they deserve to have this come to and end?!

The trial is starting today, and Jason has waived his right
to a jury trial. Please hope and pray Jason goes
    prison FOREVER.

they turned it down! as for locking him up, you bet they should lock him up and throw away the key!! if
this kid can shoot a kid in cold blood at 15 what
else is he capable of? the family members of the
victims no longer have a son/brother/cousin/nephew/
grandson to visit we have to visit a grave, we
would give anything to be able to talk to our loved
one one more time!! we would just like an honest
answer from Jason on why he did this and not the
bull about “I was teased “, oh boo hoo grow up you little scum bag!!

  8. It’s ROCORI High School… (ROckville/COld Spring/RIchmond) I stood outside that school that day for hours waiting to find out who/how many children had been shot and if my own son was alive or not. Relief turned to grief as Aaron &amp parents are friends of ours and our son’s. The trial started on Tuesday, and McLaughlin’s plead guilty to 2nd degree murder in the case of Aaron, and is pleading not guilty by reason of “mental illness” to the 1st degree murder charge for Seth. There’s no jury, as he’s waived his right to one the case is being heard by just one person… the judge. Now we wait &amp see. The victims’ families will finally have some ‘closure’. Keep them in your thoughts.

  9. Kids do get bullied at school. Yes, it is wrong to kill in revenge for being picked on
but, schools close their eyes to the problem.
Shouldn’t schools look at the underlying cause as well as the outcome?

  10. Fact is, Seth didn’t pick on him, or tease him, as the defense has repeatedly stated. They didn’t find a single witness to the teasing that supposedly took place and, as Seth’s mom has said, they are cutting down her son in an attempt at a defense. Rocori does not condone bullying or teasing.

Glad to hear the verdict today…Guilty on all counts except one–assault (he had pointed the gun at the teacher, but they didn’t find him guilty of it). I sure hope this judge is intelligent enough to know Jason wasn’t insane at the time–should know results by the end of the week.

as for Robin’s comment, I am not ashamed to admit that I have been in jail. I was attacked by a group of guys and inadvertently broke one guy’s kneecap. I’m still not even sure that I did it because of certain events that took place.
I spent 4 days in jail so I wouldn’t have to spend $1000 on bail and 2 years in court for assault. I should have gone to jail and very well would have if two people didn’t fuck up.

1: the arresting officer filled out a simple form wrong.

2: the DA filed it wrong and neglected to deliver it to my lawyer when it was requested.

I am evidence that the court system has flaws. I should have done 6 months in jail and 2 years of probation, yet got off scott free. you couldn’t even find the case in my record because of that one piece of paper.
Here is the problem with your argument. This goes out to all the dumb bitches who think Jason is some sort of special kid. He fucking killed two people.
I should have done my time in accordance to my crime… so should he !
I would not have wept if I were convicted and neither should he.
I broke a guys knee… I’m not even sure how, but I take the blame like a man and was willing to take the appropriate consequences like a man… so should he.

as for you trolls… if you love the inmates, keep it to yourself. Consider conjugal visits if you like but don’t try to fill me with your shit about how Jason is some sort of great guy, he’s still a fucking murderer.

Lastly… I only hate things that should be hated. I don’t hate kittens, I hate murderers. I don’t hate other races, religions and creeds, I hate child molesters, gang bangers, and cult cronies. You get the point ? One more thing I hate are liberal minded nitwits, who think that every nice guy who commits a crime should be set free based on how nice he may have been before the crime. Fuck that and fuck you… murderers and other people who have portrayed evidence that they are not fit for society should be shot… after a good torture session.

And on the note about Jason being set free- he should be put in a facility that can help him, not thrown in jail where he will never get any help. The question is not whether he should be set free or not but where he should be locked up. The hate you have in your heart for Jason and all the other people who support him as a person – not what he did- is just as bad as the hate Jason carried. May God forgive you as he will a child like Jason.

  20. What in this society has caused us to hate a (then) 15-year-old boy so much? My son was
in the same grade as Seth and Jason, and spoketo both the victim and the shooter that
morning. He wasn’t close buddies with either, but he like the both of them as people.
He thinks that it is a horrible thing that Seth died, but he also thinks it is a horrible
thing that Jason is being made out to be a “monster.” It is almost 2 years later and my
son still can’t watch the news or read the paper because of the anger it causes in him.

Unless our last name is Bartell, or Rollins, or McLaughlin, we can’t even BEGIN to possibly
know what truly happened in those preceeding months.

How can we judge? I have faults of my own. Okay, so I didn’t kill anyone, but who has the
right to judge my faults? Nobody. It is not up to me to judge anyone else.

My son said that nobody should judge Jason unless they have actually met the boy and have
really gotten to know him. I think we can learn from that attitude.

This may be simple thinking, but after 2 years, I still have to try to calm the anger of
my son. He continues to be confused by all aspects of this. There were many victims that
day…Seth, Aaron, Jason, and many, many other kids.

  21. Thank you Trench! I’m the ORIGINAL Rocori Mom on this message board!! Amazing–I wonder why someone has to copy my name on here 😕 And to that other “ROCORI mom”, how can we hate? how can we judge? My question is, how can we not? He took the time to plan, scheme, check out security cameras, days before he decided to steal his daddy’s gun &amp hunt down &amp kill Seth!! You know, some of the biggest mass murderers i.e., Jeffrey Daumer, were such “nice people”!! Tell me he wasn’t totally insane — common sense says that murder is not a sane act! That still gives him no right to lounge in a mental hospital!

Jason’s “Jake” didn’t materialize in “person” until AFTER Jason was in jail… he was supposedly just a voice before then. And Jason even said he didn’t shoot Seth and, inadvertantly, Aaron because of what his voice said. I’m going with the prosecution on this one. Aaron’s sister, twin brother, parents, and friends believe Jason planned this in as right a mind as a murderer could. Quite a lot of Jason’s “emerging” mental illness showed up after being already locked up (seeing “jake” and dead people).

One more thing, what kind of asset to society will Jason ever be even if he is found not guilty by reason of insanity? Does anyone actually think he’ll be “cured” enough to be let go? Prison is where murderers are sent!! Any idea how long in a mental institution it would take to “cure” Jason? Do you want him living next door to you if/when they would decide he could be set free? Not I!! 😥

  23. Oh, Jaci, when you grow up, you will understand what I mean. You don’t know me as a person I used to work in one of the Rocori elementary schools, and I know many of the students there. As to being an asset to society, maybe I should have phrased it as being a productive member of society. I do not hate, althought it seemed as such in my last post, and I do apologize for sounding as such. I do disagree with you, but do not hate. As for your not knowing what I’ve done, that’s because you do not know me–of course, if you live in the Rocori area, you just may!! And to Rocori Student, I completely understand how you must feel–I don’t know if you were there that tragic day but many of the students and staff who were still relive it.

Back to Jaci, being an “asset”, i.e., productive member of society, means to do things like hold a job, possibly get married, raise a family, enjoy life with friends and family, and strive for the American Dream. In my book, the American Dream doesn’t include having a child shot down in cold blood while going to school, nor does it include having your child suffer for three years without even recognizing something terribly wrong and having to deal with what Jason’s parents &amp family must endure either.

I AM IN NO WAY SAYING WHAT JASON DID WAS RIGHT AND I AM NOT SAYING THAT HE SHOULDNT BE PUNISHED BUT LIVING IN A MENTAL FACILITY IS NOT CAKE AND ICE CREAM. BESIDES LIVING WITH A MENTAL ILLNESS ALONE IS SOMETHING THAT HE WILL HAVE THE REST OF HIS LIFE. IT JUST MAKES ME REALLY SAD THAT SO MANY OF YOU THAT WANT JASON TO DIE OR GO TO PRISON FOR LIFE WITHOUT ANY TYPE OF HELP. TO ME THAT IS COLD BLOODED. IT IS LIKE NOT PUTTING A DEER OUT OF ITS MISERY AFTER HITTING IT WITH A CAR. DO YOU JUST WANT HIM TO SUFFER? NOT ONLY WILL JASON SUFFER BUT SO WILL HIS FAMILY. THEY ARE DEALING WITH ALL OF THIS AND THEY UNDERSTAND THE REALITIES OF THE SITUATION UNLIKE JASON. YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TYPE OF PAIN HIS FAMILY FEELS. AND HOW SORRY THEY ARE FOR WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO SETH AND AARON. IF THEY COULD TAKE IT BACK THEY WOULD. AS OF RIGHT NOW LIFE FOR THEM IS A NIGHTMARE AND PROBABLY WILL BE FOR A LONG LONG TIME. 28. Jaci, you seem to confuse the word “revenge” with “justice”! We want justice for the horrific crime that Jason committed. Jason took gun safety–he knew a .22 would kill. Now, after being locked up for over a year, he’s not only hearing a voice, it’s multiple voices, along with seeing and smelling people/things that aren’t there. Speaking of movies, ever see the Sixth Sense — “I see dead people”??

What the hell is wrong with you ? he is the criminal, he is the murderer, and he is due for a long term in prison.
You coddling these psychos is going to have one effect and one effect only. One day, someone you love will be murdered… (as much as I despise you, god forbid that such a thing happen) But if so, I would love to hear your opinion on the murderous victim then.

  34. If I remember right, and I’m sure I’ll be corrected if I’m wrong, the kid didn’t say “I see dead people” when he saw the ones hanging in the school… did he? The defense’s psychiatrist contends today that Jason didn’t specifically say that either. Nobody said he did! He just used the scene in the movie to describe the “hanging dead”.

Dr. Hackett also stated today that she hasn’t spoken with Jason since earlier in the year when he went off his meds. Doctors at the Minnesota Security Hospital in St. Peter, where Jason’s been held state they found it odd that his mental illness symptoms seem to have gotten better so dramatically since he has been off the medications.

And on my final note of the day… “If McLaughlin is found to have been insane at the time of the shootings, he would be committed to a secure mental facility. If he is found not to have been insane, he will be sent to prison after sentencing. Klumpp (the prosecutor) has argued that McLaughlin is feigning mental illness to enable him to say at a security hospital, where he is able to play video games and order pizza.”

Hmmm… just went throught and read all the comments on this case.

First off, to Jim – you sound like a nice guy who has had some bad experiences and it comes out in your “writings” which is why people here have attacked you. I would try to not express yourself as you “first” did and you will have no problems — and I wish you luck in the future.

Jaci – you sound like a good friend to the shooter and his family. Everyone involved is a victim in one way or the other.

I, too, have sympathy for the shooter, but regardless of why he did it or how “mental” he was at the time, he still did it! Somewhere no one taught him that he cannot kill and if you do the things you see all the time on TV , movies, et cetera, there are real consequences for all. Afterthefact, we cannot do anything about those consequences.

I think this case was more “temporary insanity” than anything else. Personally I think a lot of the blame can be put on society today, as we know it. The violence our kids are exposed to every day that neutralizes them to any feelings where violence is concerned is the problem. Examples of this are everywhere! We do not react anymore to violent acts ’cause they are so commonplace – in the news, on video games, in movies, et cetera. We watch these things and don’t react to the horror that they should instill in us. When our children are exposed to this violence from little on up, then do some awful act, we wonder why. Well, folks — the reason is simple. We have conditioned them to not think this is anything unnatural or horrible. You can’t expect someone to have a steady diet of “violence” then think it is anything abnormal ’cause it is normal today. We are warping society and our kids.

As for the “teasing” and what role it played in the final outcome, as I am sure it was a factor, would not have led to this violent act if all the other conditioning, society factors were not so commonplace ( meaning the violence we are exposed to in our daily routines). Also, this anything goes, no rules/ no discipline lax parenting is also a factor. Our kids don’t have any boundaries anymore, are given too much, and grow up with this “me” attitude.

How many “supposedly normal kids” have to do horrendous acts before society and parents wise up to what damage is being done by life as it is today – no values, no rules, no responsibility, no God! We need to find a way to stop this acceptance of any type of language, behavior, et cetera. Can we reverse things at this stage of the game? That is the question!

    Like

  38. The blame society cop-out. I was wondering how long it would take to see that. If parents didn’t want their kids exposed to all this violence as you say then they should do a better job. We are all responsible for our own actions. To put the blame on “society” is to try and take blame off the killers. And again it was proven in court that he was not teased by Seth Bartell. Not to mention I am so tired of that excuse. A lot of people were teased in school. I was too. But the vast majority of us didn’t kill anyone.

Oops! There seems to be another factor in this saga! It appears that, unless he is making this all up, Jason really does have schizophrenic leanings and a family history. His family seemed not to be aware of what was really taking place in Jason’s mind and were not reading properly his activities – one being making homemade bombs, which was in preparation for his future career leanings.
And the one other factor of today that I didn’t directly name and a really big factor in behavior today, is our internet usage and the rudeness, hostility, and other anti social bullying displayed everywhere on the net. This behavior spills over into “reality” when those displaying this mentality leave this fantasy world. This is a new arena for our pyschologists of today.

Below is a link to the evaluation report on Jason McLaughlin.

Add together the psychological changes happening in Jason, along with society today as we know it, and you will get the full picture.

I like how you quickly addressed my personality disorder to keep it at bay 🙄
A little about me… I have had good and bad experiences. Matter of a fact I have experienced nearly everything I have desired in life so far. With good comes bad and I have zero regrets because my life is one that most people long for. But none of my experiences have made me bitter or filled with angst. I don’t let bad times reflect on future experiences or control my levels of fear and/or hatred. I have more control over my emotions than most people and am not shy about anything what-so-ever.
The people who “attack me” usually do so because I remind them of how idiotic their thought patterns are… even if I hadn’t done so directly. They are upset that more people do not agree with their ‘hug a llama, kiss a tree, save a murderer’ personality defunct in which they (foolishly) display here at the Trenchcoat. I am an easy target because (next to Trench) I am one of the most outspoken regulars here… have been for around 3 years now. So I tend to be the person that the Trolls attack. They do not however expect me to snap back and retort because these careless nitwits are used to chat rooms where a simple complaint can have your opponent removed. I am only removable by Trench and he tends to like when I tell off morons like these… Hence the birth of T.O.A.S.T.
How you express yourself dear ssea is your own personal issue I express myself as you have read and shall as long as I kill little bunnys for food and dream about kittens (use Stephen Lynch for the kitten reference.) I do think your ‘be nice to the bully – pull out your semi-liberal thoughts and plug away’ gimmick was cute.
did you look up Stephen Lynch ? his song about Kittens ? this would help you understand what I think of cute things 😈

Now for the subject at hand… You feel sympathy for the shooter ? exactly what makes him worthy of sympathy ? because he is pretending to be crazy ? because he wants a way out of the prison sentence he rightfully deserves ? He shot and killed 2 humans… people who could have been one of yours or mine. can you please join us and put this into perspective ? I understand your desire to find humanity in every aspect of life… but he is the cause of death now… he lost his humanity and is deserving of nothing so we here at the Trenchcoat offer no sympathy to this murderer.

…And I offer none to his sympathisers either.

oh and since I have to make fun of you now… whats up with the screenname ? is that a studder or a lisp ?

Afterthefact, we cannot do anything about those consequences.”
