Backpage responds to CNN

Online sex ads complicate crackdowns on teen trafficking:

This is an article from CNN’s Amber Lyon, she of the Craig Newmark ‘ambush’ interview. It’s a follow-up to craigslist shutting down its adult services section. In it, she talks about how the human trafficking ads have migrated to the Village Voice Media-owned Backpage.

A representative from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says that only a small fraction of the human trafficking and prostitution ads get referred to them.

When asked for comment Backpage had this to say…

Backpage.com told CNN that it promptly responds to law enforcement inquiries, and says the site includes links to help users notify the NCMEC if they identify potential abuses.

Now, where have I heard that response before? Oh, that’s right, that used to be the same response craigslist gave when asked the same question. How does that saying go? Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it.

I’ll give Ms. Lyon plenty of credit. She didn’t hesitate to follow the traffic to Backpage. I can only hope that she soon calls Village Voice Media out on the carpet as I have been doing before craigslist shut down adult services.

It would probably be a good idea to get your head out of …well you know where it’s been…. and read some international newspapers once in a while.

  3. Umm, Gldqueen…kidnapping young girls and forcing them into prostitution, then selling the girls on Craig’s List, is RAPE. And allowing them to continue, just because it “will never end” is just as criminal as the pimps. If you saw cockroaches running through your home, would you say “we’ll never eradicated cockroaches, ever, they’ve been around forever and will never become extinct, so I’m just going to let them live here and never use Raid on them…?” Doubtful. If it were YOUR house, YOUR life being destroyed by cockroaches, you would be calling Terminex so fast, or getting your shoe to kill them, or spraying a bottle of raid to kill them…why can’t we protect young girls against this, just as we would protect our own selves from harm, by not allowing them to exist in the first place?

  4. Human trafficking is alive and well and is very real.  It is unfortunate that people are not aware that this problem really exists. I work at a correction facility for juveniles and heard their horror stories. I doubt anyone would want their daughter treated that way.  There needs to be tougher laws against the pricks that use the girls this way, pimps and the ones who buy the girls.  Women have also been guilty of luring the girls to the pimp. All those involved need to know that it is unacceptable to treat people this way and what better way of conveying the message than with tougher sentences. Our kids are not trash.
