Here we have an article from right here in Charlotte, NC (where I live) where a local prosecutor talks about the sex offender ban on sites like MySpace and Facebook.
Prosecutor Kelly Miller says the law is great idea, but difficult to enforce because registered sex offenders on probation typically use the internet in the privacy of their homes. They often use different screen names and don’t have their pictures on the account.
Wow. You think someone would have warned the state of North Carolina about how futile this ban is. Oh, wait. I did that too.
Back when North Carolina’s Attorney General Roy Cooper first proposed this law I said that this was nothing more than feel-good legislation designed not to catch sex offenders but ti get Cooper reelected.
Granted it has caught a few stupid sex offenders in its net but for the most part, it’s done nothing to protect children on social networking sites.
Again the state can’t really do anything to protect your children from online predators. Only parents can do that.
