Authorities in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil said an adult gunman opened fire in the Tasso da Silveira school killing 11 students. The age of the students in the school range between the ages of 9 and 14.
The gunman is said to be 24-year-old Wellington Menezes de Oliveira who was a former student of the school. De Oliveira supposedly scammed his way into the school by saying he was there to give a speech. Instead, he went through the school armed with two revolvers.
Police responded and shot de Oliveira in the leg. At that point, de Oliveira took the coward’s way out by shooting himself in the head. Supposedly there was a note left at the scene by de Oliveira that indicated he had HIV and wanted to die.
This continues the latest disturbing trend in school violence of adults attacking schools rather than students. In the past few years off the top of my head, I can name Charles Roberts IV who killed several Amish school children at Nickel Mines in Pennsylvania, Bruco Eastwood who shot two students at a middle school in Colorado and Duane Morrison who shot and killed Emily Keyes at Platte Canyon High School.
Also, this is not the first time that I have heard of a school shooting in South America as there was a shooting in Argentina that left 4 dead in 2004.
I’ll post more on this as details become available and time allows.
