Sparks Middle School Shooting: Did anti-bullying video play a role?:

ironypolice

In the past 13 years that I’ve been writing about these type of crimes I’ve heard school shootings blamed on many boogeymen, video games, violent movies, and heavy metal to name a few. I can honestly say that this is the first time I’ve ever heard one being blamed on a an anti-bullying video…

“It was an anti-bullying movie but it could have gotten into his head about the girl scaring the bullies with the gun. She brought a gun on the bus to scare them and threatened to kill them,” Amaya told News 4.

We asked her what message she thinks the video sends to students.

“That maybe it’s easier to scare your bullies than just to tell a teacher,” she said.

Does this mean we’ll see a knee jerk call to end all anti-bullying programs because they ‘obviously’ cause school shootings just like the other things I mentioned? I doubt it because supposedly they’re for the greater good even though they haven’t actually stopped bullying or school shootings.

The school district is claiming they are unaware of such a video.

Anti-bullying and other PSA-type videos are not at all subtle. They can and do portray whatever it is they want to stop negatively, and right after that scene say something along the lines of “THIS IS A REALLY BAD IDEA.” I actually found those types of videos really insulting to my intelligence when I was in middle school.

But of course anti-bullying programs have failed to stop school shootings– not because they haven’t curbed bullying at all, but because BULLYING HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SCHOOL SHOOTINGS.

It’s been nearly 10 years since I was this kid’s age. I got bullied. I think a very large chunk of people get bullied in middle school. Absolutely nobody ever brought a gun, let alone pointed it at someone and fired. We were fortunate that we didn’t have any crazy, sociopathic little shits running around, or at least any who were motivated enough to shoot us up.
