Cheer coach accused of asking teen for nude Snapchat

Once again I find myself asking the question why does it always seem to be teachers and coaches who are using Snapchat to prey on underage students?

For the uninitiated Snapchat is a smart phone app that allows you to share pictures with people on your friends list and the pictures are supposed to disappear after a short amount of time. That hasn’t stopped people from figuring out how to save the allegedly temporary pictures.

Anyway 23-year-old Jose Miguel Alvarez, of College Station, Texas, was a cheerleading coach at a local gym. He’s accused of allegedly requesting a nude picture on Snapchat from a 13-year-old girl.

The next day, the detective took the girl to a center that conducts forensic interviews on children. The 13-year-old told the interviewer that Alvarez had asked her if “she was one of the bad girls that send photographs.” After initially refusing his request, she sent him one nude photo from the waist up after he told her he would give her private cheerleading lessons, according to the probable cause statement.

Creeptastic.

While Snapchat may not be as bad as Kik it’s still not something that your kids should be using without a parent doing occasional checks. You may also want to have a talk with your kids about how Snapchat pics aren’t as temporary as they might think.
