Back when this site was called TheTrenchcoat Chronicles, I would post about virtually every school shooting plot that resulted in criminal charges. I don’t do that anymore for a few reasons. The first is time. Since I focus on crimes other than school violence, I’m not afforded the time to post about every single one. Another reason is that I don’t want to give the attention that a lot of these kids are craving. Lastly, most of these plots never make it past what I call the ‘journal’ stage, meaning that they’ve written about it, but have yet to obtain any weapons. Recently, one such plotter was arrested for allegedly making it well past the journal stage.
Last week, police in Thurmont, Maryland, arrested 18-year-old Nicole Cevario for allegedly plotting an attack against Catoctin High School. I mention the journal because it was her father discovering a detailed journal that caused him to call police. Stop the presses and declare a national holiday because we have a parent here doing their actual job.
When police investigated the home they discovered a shotgun, ammunition and several ingredients used in making improvised explosive devices, such as pipes with end caps, nails, fireworks, magnesium tape and fuse materials. Cevario reportedly planned to carry out the attack on April 5th. The significance of that particular date is unknown at this time, but police have said that they believe that Cevario intended to end her life that day after committing the attack. Investigators have also said that they don’t believe bullying was an issue but no other motive has been discussed at this time. She is currently being held for a psychiatric evaluation. No word yet on if she is a columbiner, but I wouldn’t be surprised as columbiners tend to skew towards being female, in my experience.
This story is sort of an odd duck. While it’s not unheard of for a female student to help plan a school shooting, they’re usually either accessories with a co-conspirator, or they never make it past the journal or hit list stage. Not only is this the first time I can remember a solo female would-be school shooter, it’s also the first time I’ve seen a female have so many weapons collected all on her own. If not for her father, she may very well have been the first female school shooter in a very long time.
Again, what a thought, parents actually parenting and not living in a constant state of denial. It’s amazing how that works sometimes. It can literally save lives.
