22-year-old Gilbert Balderas of Orosi, California, was an employee of the local school district. He is said to have helped with the school district’s after school program. Since we’re talking about a school employee, you can probably guess what app he used to commit a crime. That’s right, Balderas not only sent nude pictures of himself to an 11-year-old female student of the district over Snapchat, but he also said they should meet up. I’m guessing it wasn’t for milk and cookies or juice boxes. Balderas pleaded no contest to distributing or showing pornography to a minor and contact with a minor for sexual offense, and was sentenced to a year in county jail.
While Kik seems to be the app of choice for strangers on the internet, Snapchat seems to be the app of choice of predators your kids may know. And more often than not, Snapchat is used by an inordinate amount of teachers, coaches and school employees to commit such crimes.
UPDATE 8/1/2017: Balderas was sentenced to a year in prison, 3 years suspended and 5 years probation.
