21-year-old Maribely Lopez of Lindenwold, New Jersey was shot and killed back in March outside a vacant home in Willingboro, New Jersey. Lopez was in her car and was there to meet someone she was supposed to be selling a phone to through the marketplace app OfferUp. Instead, she was shot once in the back of the head and died from the attack.
More recently, 20-year-old Marvin A. Coleman Jr. was arrested and charged with her murder. Normally in cases like this, a murder is committed in the commission of a robbery, however, the phone Ms. Lopez was trying to sell was found in her car leaving the motive for the attack in question.
I acknowledge that there are segments of the population who may not trust the police and have every right to mistrust them. However, anytime you’re selling something on one of these apps or websites you should always make the transaction at a local police department. While it’s not a perfect solution it goes a long way in trying to ensure your own safety.
