I’m usually dismissive of crime documentaries. It seems more often than not that they only provide one half of the story. Making a Murderer and the Paradise Lost series immediately come to mind. However, a Texas filmmaker is getting ready to make a documentary that I am more than willing to get behind.
Carina Saunders was 19 when she was brutally murdered in 2011. Her dismembered body was found in a duffle bag behind a store in Bethany, Oklahoma. People of interest have been arrested for her murder only to be later released.
In 2017, police seized items, which belonged to Carina, from a home where Carina was last seen alive. The person who owned the home was believed to have prostituted Carina but maintains his innocence. State investigators also believe there is a cell phone video of Carina’s murder in someone’s possession. There has been a theory floating around various law enforcement circles that Carina was killed as an example to coerce other women into being trafficked.
Now, a Texas filmmaker by the name of Josh Vargas wants to make a documentary about Carina’s unsolved murder.
“I am a filmmaker…this is what I do. It is the biggest ace in my deck for helping the family,” said Vargas.
“I plan to talk with anyone closely affiliated with the case or those who knew her before this tragedy,” said Vargas.
Vargas has teamed up with the family to create a documentary about Carina Saunders’ life and death – one they hope will bring in new leads.
Hopefully, Vargas’ film will get the attention of the American public like lesser and more prejudiced documentaries have.
There is still a $10,000 reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Carina’s killer or killers.
