I originally posted about the 2017 murder of Hesham Kamel here. The 52-year-old man was shot in killed in Cleveland after leaving to meet someone who was interested in buying his car through the OfferUp app in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Kamel was approached by four individuals when a scuffle ensued. Someone produced a gun that Mr. Kamel tried to grab and was shot instead.
Earlier this month, 21-year-olds Michael Butler and Prophet Beverly were indicted on charges of aggravated murder. The pair plus two minors are said to have hatched a plan to rob someone off of OfferUp.
Beverly was already in prison after pleading guilty to a different armed robbery. Butler was arrested earlier this month.
If you’re going to use a service like OfferUp, I always recommend meeting the other person at a local police station. While that doesn’t 100% guarantee your safety, it does go a long way in protecting you.
