Pro-wrestler Alberto Del Rio charged with sexual assault

Jose A. Rodriguez Chucuan aka Alberto Del Rio

42-year-old Jose A. Rodriguez Chucuan is better known to most as former WWE Champion Alberto Del Rio. He also wrestled for Impact Wrestling, Lucha Underground, and various independent promotions as Alberto El Patron. He was recently arrested by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office in Texas.  He is said to live in the San Antonio area. Del Rio was arrested on charges of sexual assault and if what the victim claims is true then the phrase ‘sexual assault’ is putting it mildly.

The victim claims that Del Rio accused her of infidelity and when she wouldn’t admit to it he repeatedly slapped her. He then allegedly made the victim put on a dress and dance for him. He is said to have threatened the victim by saying that if she cried he would take her son “drop him off in the middle of the road somewhere.”

If that wasn’t reprehensible enough, the following is rather graphic. If you have any sensitivity over the discussion of sexual assault you may want to skip the rest of this post.

Police said Rodriguez Chucuan then tied the woman’s hands with boxing straps, put a sock in her mouth and sexually assaulted her for several hours, using various objects. According to investigators, he also punched her in the back during the assault, causing visible injuries.

The victim is said to have photographic evidence of her injuries.

Del Rio was released from jail earlier today after posting a $50,000 bond.

This is far from the first time that Del Rio has courted controversy. He was released from WWE after slapping a WWE employee who allegedly made a racist comment to Del Rio. Then there was his tumultuous relationship with former WWE Divas Champion Paige. The pair were known to have public quarrels with one incident in the Orlando Airport making headlines. Paige was initially charged with domestic violence but the charges were later dropped.

Del Rio was also rumored to have substance abuse issues. He was suspended by WWE in 2016 for failing their ‘wellness policy’. This alleged alcohol-fueled rant where he burned several bridges didn’t help to quell those rumors.

What I’m getting at is that Del Rio has a history of erratic behavior, to put it mildly.

What concerns me the most about this story is that even if half of what the victim claims is true, his bond should have been a lot higher. Like at least in the $1M range. I’d be interested to know what kind of precautions have been put in place to keep Del Rio from further accosting the victim. I hope it’s more than an ankle monitor.

If convicted, Del Rio could face a minimum sentence of two years behind bars.
