Mississippi man killed in Alabama LetGo murder

45-year-old Michael Jones, of Columbus, Mississippi was found shot and killed in an abandoned home in Bessemer, Alabama. Jones was believed to have been lured to the home by someone on the marketplace app LetGo.  Jones thought he was going to meet a man who was selling an iPhone but instead his body was found after he failed to return home. So far, no arrests have been made.

Investigators from Bessemer and Mississippi are working together to determine who is responsible, and why. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Bessemer police at 205-425-2411, the Tip Line at 205-428-3541, Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777, the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office at 662-328-6788 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at 1-800-530-7151. No matter how slick a marketplace app may look, most of them are just a craigslist clone in disguise and are just as dangerous. If you’re looking to do business through one of these apps or platforms, never meet the other person at your home or what they claim to be their home. Even meeting during the day with witnesses around will not stop some of these criminals.

I know now more than ever, community relationships with most police departments are strained to say the least. However, many police departments have dedicated areas to make transactions like this. It’s not 100% guaranteed that you still won’t be robbed or swindled but it will go a long way in discouraging criminals from trying.
