19-year-old Andrew Joseph Joyce of Kokomo, Indiana, was recently arrested for allegedly having sex (child rape) with a 13-year-old girl from the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania area. Joyce is said to have met the girl on the random video chat website Omegle.
Until I feel like enough people are aware of the dangers of Omegle, I’ll continue to provide an explanation of what Omegle is. Omegle is a website that allows video chat between two random people. Omegle’s own motto is “Talk to strangers.” Omegle’s video chat can be accessed on any internet enabled device that has a camera and a web browser. That means it can be accessed on smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Omegle has no real age check and can be accessed by anyone of any age. It’s also a haven for predators and child porn collectors. Again, it’s a website and not an app. If you want to know if your kids are using Omegle, you need to check their browser history.
Anyway, Joyce is accused of flying from Kokomo to Harrisburg after meeting the girl on Omegle. Once he got to the Harrisburg Airport, he took an Uber to the girl’s home. More creeps are taking Ubers these days. I wonder if Greyhound is jealous that they’re losing the creeper market to rideshares. I’d also like to know where a 19-year-old got money for a plane ticket and a lengthy Uber ride. When I was 19, I could barely afford gas money and tolls. I bet it’s crryptomining.
Seriously though, Joyce is said to have hidden in the girl’s bedroom closet during his two-day stay in Pennsylvania. He was eventually discovered by the girl’s mother and turned over to police.
I know I sound like a broken record, but parents cannot just let kids have unfettered access to their devices at all times. If you do, you might as well leave the window open to your kid’s room. Learn how to use the parental controls on your kids’ devices. Think about holding on to their devices after their bedtime. I understand that you can’t be around them 24 hours but control the time that you can. That leaves less of a chance that you’ll find some out of state creeper in your kid’s closet.
