Early last month, the FBI arrested Denton, Texas police officer David Schoolcraft for allegedly trading in child porn. It’s alleged that Schoolcraft was the administrator of a child porn trading group on mobile messaging app Kik. Kik is said to have deleted an account that Schoolcraft reportedly used to trade child porn, but he just made another account.
Even though Schoolcraft has pleaded not guilty, he is said to have admitted his role to federal agents.
According to court records, Schoolcraft admitted in an interview with a federal agent he used the Kik account to trade and save photos and videos “at the park, in his squad car, at the police department, and anywhere else he had Wi-Fi” and that the content was “entirely underage.”
At the time of his arrest, Schoolcraft was put on paid leave. He was eventually suspended without pay at the time of his indictment.
He’s looking at a potential sentence of 5 to 20 years in prison.
As they say, power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely, and who has more power than the police? And that’s what most of the sex offenders, pedophiles, child porn collectors, and child traffickers on Kik get off on, the power that they hold over their victims whether they’re in person or virtual.
Maybe it’s time to inflict harsher penalties for creeper cops as opposed to your garden variety creeper. After all, these men and women are entrusted to protect the public’s safety. If they violate that trust, they should be prosecuted more vigorously. No slaps on the wrist allowed.
Also, maybe Google and Apple should consider dropping Kik from their respective app stores if Kik doesn’t do something about its predator problem.
