Prosecutor puts stop to Oxford school shooting rumor

Prosecutor puts stop to Oxford school shooting rumor

By now, most of us should be already familiar with the Crumbley family. 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley is accused of killing four students in a shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan. His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are said to have bought him the gun used in the shooting, and they allegedly tried to evade capture once they were charged with involuntary manslaughter. You can keep up with the Crumbleys here.

Anyway, social media being what it is, I’m looking at you Facebook, a rumor has spread around the Oxford area that Ethan Crumbley has been deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald took to social media herself to put a stop to these rumors.

“The office of the Oakland County Prosecutor has become aware of posts on social media claiming the Oxford High School shooting suspect has been deemed incompetent to stand trial. This is absolutely untrue. Please refrain from sharing inaccurate information.”

I understand that the community might be on edge and is worried about a teenage mass murderer escaping justice. However, it doesn’t help anybody if you believe everything you see on the internet, let alone social media.

Even if Ethan Crumbley is found unfit to stand trial, that doesn’t necessarily mean he will never be tried. Off the top of my head, I can think of at least one school shooter who was deemed unfit before finally being tried and convicted, and that was One Goh of the Oikos University shooting.

As the saying goes, the wheels of justice turn slowly, but grind exceedingly fine. Have patience.
