Parkland reenactment to use live ammo

Yes, there’s been a story that’s caused me to come out of my anxiety-induced writing hibernation. Not that I’m any kind of wise sage coming down from the mountain to depart his wisdom onto the masses. (But seriously, if you want me to be able to get therapy, please subscribe to my Patreon.)

Anyway, there’s a news story going around about the Parkland school shooting, and I think its headlines are designed to induce outrage. If you only read the headline, which too many people do, unfortunately, you’re not getting the full story. Even I’m guilty of this by using the headline above.

So, on August 4th, there’s going to be a reenactment of the 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. You know the one, the deadliest school shooting at a high school in American history. It’s a disgrace that we have that kind of history, but I digress.

We’re not talking like this is a Civil War reenactment where participants will be dressing up as the shooter or victims. This will be a forensic reenactment of the shooting, which is part of a civil lawsuit against former school resource officer, and perennial coward, Scot Peterson. The lawsuit was filed by many of the victims’ families.

The heart of the matter is Peterson’s claims he couldn’t tell where the gunshots were coming from due to the acoustics of the school. When the reenactment occurs, ballistics experts will be firing live rounds from an AR-15 into a ballistic bullet traps. Blanks are said to have a different sound than live rounds.

The building where the shooting took place has not been used since the shooting and is scheduled to be demolished some time after the reenactment takes place. No students will be at the school as the school year doesn’t start until August 21st.

While some people may find the reenactment to be in poor taste, keep in mind that it is part of the process of the victim’s families hopefully finding a modicum of justice against a man who allegedly failed at the duty he was given and failed to protect the lives of children he was entrusted.

If the criminal court couldn’t find him guilty, hopefully the civil court will.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a cave to crawl back into.
