25-year-old's school shooting 'joke' shows problem with gun culture

Last April, 25-year-old Kyle Hendrickson dropped off his mom at Portsmouth High School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was an employee of the school.

In a ‘hey y’all, watch this’ moment, Hendrickson allegedly took out a handgun and pointed it at the school. With his other hand, Hendrickson is said to have recorded a video showing him pointing the gun out of the window of his car. Then he thought better of what he was doing and safely put the gun away before deleting the video.

Just kidding. He posted the video to Snapchat, with the caption of “Imma gonna shoot up the school”. What horrible grammar. You never use gonna after Imma, it’s already implied.

Of course, this led to his arrest. When police searched his SUV, they found (deep breath)…

…a Kittery Trading Post bag with four boxes of assorted ammunition, a Sig Romeo 7 red dot sight for a modern sporting rifle, six buckshot shotgun rounds and a box of 22 caliber rim fire ammunition. In the back trunk, they found camouflage body armor, a box of 50 rounds of 40 caliber Smith & Wesson ammunition, a box of five shotgun rounds, an unloaded Chiappa Firearms shotgun and an unloaded Radical 5.56 RG15 assault rifle.

In the center console of the car, police said they recovered a 556 magazine and 13 rounds of 40-caliber Smith & Wesson ammunition within a handgun magazine.

Stop drooling, gun nerds.

Hendrickson was arrested in Portland, Maine, which is about an hour drive from Portsmouth. He is said to have disposed of the handgun behind the motel he was staying at in Maine. At the time of his arrest, Hendrickson told police the video was just a joke. He’s what my dad would have called a ‘smacked ass’.

Last month, Hendrickson was indicted by a federal grand jury. He’s charged with one count of interstate threatening communications and one count of possessing a firearm in a school zone. He’s looking at a possible ten-year sentence along with a $250,000 fine if found guilty.

Why was he only charged with these two crimes? Because both New Hampshire and Maine have some of the loosest gun laws in the country. If you didn’t know, there are a lot of rednecks in New England.

I know what the gun nerds are probably thinking. They’re thinking about cruising for dates at the family reunion. But beside that, they’re thinking, this is just some good ol’ boy goin’ huntin’. He must not be very good at it then if he needs a semiautomatic rifle with a 30-round magazine.

As one hunter puts it…

A hunter does not need a semi-automatic rifle to hunt, if he does he sucks, and should go play video games.

These are not hunters but wannabe weekend warriors.

They’re also not good for home defense, as the AR-15 is said to be difficult to maneuver in close quarters. And if you miss, the rounds will not only pass through the walls of your own home, potentially endangering your own family, but they have enough velocity to penetrate the walls of your neighbor’s home.

So, essentially, if you own an AR-15, you’re either a noob or a pussy.
