On May 13th, a teacher at Wilson’s Mills Elementary School in Johnston County, North Carolina, brought a handgun onto campus. She says it was an accident. According to reports, she placed the weapon, a Glock, in her bag while rushing to gather her materials that morning. She later discovered it during a meeting at school and reported it to staff.
She has since been charged with felony possession of a weapon on school property and misdemeanor possession of a concealed weapon. Johnston County Schools confirmed she is no longer employed with the district.
I won’t be naming her here. She’s been charged with a crime, and she’s lost her job, but at least she had the sense to notify school authorities once she realized the mistake. That said, this is exactly the kind of incident that shatters the illusion of what a ‘responsible gun owner™‘ is supposed to be.
This wasn’t a threat. No one was harmed. But that’s not the point. A gun made it into an elementary school classroom because its owner treated it like it was just another item in her bag, no different than her keys or her phone. That’s not responsibility. That’s negligence.
And if a legally owned weapon can end up inside a school this easily, it raises some uncomfortable questions about just how many more times this has already happened without anyone realizing it. Not every case ends in a tragedy, but every one of these moments inches us closer to one.
