Teen Arrested for Threat, But Where Are the Guns?

Authorities in Waushara County, Wisconsin, say a 16-year-old student at Wautoma High School threatened to carry out a shooting targeting law enforcement. The report came from a social worker, who notified county dispatch shortly after 1 p.m. Family members allegedly told officials that guns from their home were missing while the teen was at school.

The high school went into lockdown after an off-duty police chief requested officers be sent to the building. The student was located within minutes and resisted attempts to detain him but was quickly taken into custody. Police later stated that while threats were confirmed, the teen did not have any weapons on him at the time of arrest. He has since been transferred to a juvenile detention facility, with multiple charges referred.

Authorities keep repeating that the teenager was unarmed. Fine. But family members reported that firearms were missing from the home. So where the fuck are they? You don’t get to claim there’s no danger if the weapons that supposedly triggered the lockdown are still unaccounted for. The student could have stashed them somewhere before arriving at school. He could have hidden them outside, left them with someone else, or dumped them to avoid being caught with them. If investigators located the guns, that needs to be stated clearly. If they didn’t, then the risk isn’t over; it’s just shifted to whoever finds them first.

And like I’ve said before, if you have kids and you keep guns in the house, get rid of the guns. If that’s too much to ask, then at the very least check on them more than once in your lifetime. Acting surprised when the guns vanish from your “secure” hiding spot, whether that’s a safe or wedged under your pillow, isn’t parenting. It’s negligence dressed up as denial.
