I’m sure by now you’ve all heard about the 14-year-old girl from New Jersey who was arrested on child porn charges for posting explicit nude pics of herself on MySpace.

In the past, I’ve had no problems with teens who get charged for child porn when they posted pics of another underage kid on MySpace but this is just idiotic. Even Maureen Kanka, the mother of Megan Kanka the namesake of Megan’s Law, says this girl needs help, not prison.

According to the second article link I posted more than like the girl will avoid jail time by entering into a plea with prosecutors. Again this is idiotic. The only thing the girl is guilty of is lack of common sense and a lack of self-respect.

However, I do think that somebody should be charged with a crime. Her parents should be charged with negligence for allowing this to happen in my opinion. I know the law doesn’t work that way but in a perfect world this girl’s parents, or parent, would be held liable for not keeping better track of their daughter’s online activities.

This is how girls end up getting abducted. As a parent, you need to remain ever vigilant of your kids’ online activities.

as I said to a friend of mine : ” I seriously think some jail time for BOTH the parent/s and the kid might do them some good”

Parents should be aware of what their children are doing on the computer, whether it be myspace or any other site. My 15 year old recently moved to FL to spend some time with her father. I still keep a close check on her myspace to make sure she isn’t getting too careless. Once when I checked, she had posted some pics she had taken with her new phone. She was fully clothed, but her poses were too suggestive, IMO. She had also changed her caption to list the actual city she lived in, and show the name of the school she attended. I called her immediately, and requested that she take the pics down, and change her caption info, which she did even before we got off the phone.

Other sites, too, can be dangerous, or offensive. My younger children like to go to youtube and watch cartoon episodes of Garfield, among others. One morning my (3 yr old) son wanted to watch Spongebob, so my (8 yr old) daughter obliged him by typing Spongebob into the youtube search feature. I was listening to their conversation from the next room, and thought it was very nice of my daughter to help her little brother. I heard the opening theme song, and figured she had managed to find what my son wanted……..until I heard a string of expletives that would put any sailor to shame! At that same moment, my daughter started shouting, “Mom, you gotta come, quick!” I was already on my way, and was just in time to witness spongebob give one of the other characters ‘the finger’. I sent them all from the room (my son was NOT pleased), and went through the first fifteen or so cartoons. By went through, I mean that I watched until something offensive happened. I think the longest I watched any particular episode before encountering some form of vulgarity was less than 30 seconds. Needless to say, my son did not get to watch Spongebob, and he was sulky until I managed to bribe him with VeggieTales.

Sorry for the novel, but I guess my point is that no sites on the web are safe until proven so by a child’s parent. And parents who are not vigilant in this are just inviting trouble into their homes.

I had wondered why on earth you would link to the pics…. I figured it must be a joke… you know, I click and I get a screaming banshee or a cat saying “i iz pervert lolz”…. serves me right for clicking, the FBI will probably kick down my door now and haul me off for being a sicko. Bloody hell.
