Omaha Father Who Ditched Nine Kids Via Safe Haven Law Has Twins on the Way:

You remember the Staton 9, don’t you? In case you don’t, they were the 9 children dropped off in Nebraska when they had their wacky safe haven law. At the time their father dropped them off at a safe haven because his wife had passed away and claimed that he could no longer care for his children.

Well, now he’s expecting twins with his new girlfriend. I guess this clown never heard of a condom or personal responsibility.

  1. That’s completely messed up. I hope these kids aren’t just thrown away like yesterday’s kids were.

  2. i am sure that he never heard of condoms. I don’t know how someone can be so irresponsible!!! And now to have 2 more? didn’t he had enough? he should be castrated

  3. so i wonder what age these two will be when he gives them away

  4. I believe Nebraska’s new law is 30 days so the clock is ticking.

  5. You write these stories of terrible things happening to children and yet you call Nebraskas law “wacky”. Maybe if every state had these “wacky” laws you could stop writing these sad stories.

    1. “Safe Haven” laws are for people who right or wrongly believe that if the people in their life knew they were pregnant/putting a child up for adoption they would face unreasonable consequences/persecution. It is to prevent them from killing the baby or leaving the baby in a risky location.

The point is that the parent(s) have the right to remain anonymous even when they hand the baby directly to someone. They may also be given referrals for medical and other services. In some states they are given a hospital bracelet or number so that they can more easily reclaim their baby if they change their mind.

This father clearly could not remain anonymous -his friends and family were going to realize the kids were gone. These kids were also old enough to know their father and they had a history of medical treatment, school records, etc that they are entitled to keep.

There should be more support available, and in some cases it should be easier to hand over your kids if you suddenly can not cope. That being said in most places if you walk into a police station or children’s services (any agency in charge of child welfare and foster care) and state that you can’t care for your kids and give proper identifying information will take your kids. And as long as you show up for the requisite court date(s) to terminate your parental rights aren’t going to charge you with child abandonment -they have better things to do with their time. The only people having problems are those that need to take a break (rehab, mental institution) but want their kids back later, they have trouble giving their kids up temporarily without being judged, charged, or worse.

However the safe haven law should not apply to anything but newborns.

  6. Well Question, being able to just drop off your children somewhere with a note that says “I don’t feel like it anymore” is a little wacky. When we make the choice to have children we make the choice to RAISE them as well. Not figure out a few years into parenting that it “just isn’t for me.”
