Leland Yee wants to set teen killers free

California bill could give juveniles in prison for life a second chance:

It’s been a while since I last talked about California State Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco). The last time was in my published post “Murder is Never Juvenile”. That’s right bitches, I was in a book. I just can’t remember what it was called. But as usual, I digress…

In that last post from 2007, Sen. Yee was trying to introduce legislation that would limit the sentence a juvenile murderer could get to 25 years. It didn’t pass. Now Sen. Yee is at it again trying to introduce new California legislation that would require that teen murderers who are sentenced to life have their sentence reviewed every 15 years. So one of these teen killers could get possibly 4 chances of getting out of jail in California.

The reason Sen. Yee keeps pushing for this kind of legislation is that he is also a child psychologist who believes that teen minds aren’t fully developed and don’t understand the repercussions of their actions and he thinks they can be rehabilitated. My very unprofessional opinion says that Dr. Yee is full of crap. Any teen that doesn’t know that when you kill someone they die should be removed from society just on general principle.

Not to mention that I think Sen. Yee forgets that California led the way of charging juveniles as adults because of all the underage gang violence of the 1990s. Does he want the days back where juveniles were committing drive-bys en masse only to be held for a couple of years if at all?

I think that Sen. Yee is reintroducing legislation like this again because he happens to be running for the mayor of San Francisco. I don’t even think most people from San Francisco would be behind this legislation as I’m sure they’re still stinging in the Bay Area over the brutal murder of Pam Vitale by Scott Dyleski.

UPDATE 8/26/11: The bill did not pass. Score one for the good guys.

You can ask any person who has taught school for a number of years and they will tell you that children have distinct personalities and traits from a very early age. Those who are mild and affable are like that from the get-go. Those who are violent, selfish, or aggressive, are that way as very young children, and those behaviors become apparent when they enter school and are surrounded by others to interact with.

The topic of child killers has been discussed to death, but the early indicators of future behavior are often cited as aggressiveness, bullying, torture of animals, etc. and you cannot tell me that any child who murders another creature with any sense of purpose is going to be any more stable as an adult. In fact, I would be more afraid of the adult version of a juvenile murderer than an adult who had murdered someone in the commission of a crime or in a fit or passion or rage or jealousy.

[I realize that some children have murdered adults who abused them, but I still think that it’s an extreme choice to make, especially in this day and age when there are so many options for kids to seek help without the adult finding out in time to harm them again.]

If it were just a matter of our little minds not being fully developed as children, there would be many more of us who had murdered others at an early age, wouldn’t there? Considering how unfair the world seems to most normal children anyway, we would have all been killing bullies or mean teachers or parents who denied us what we wanted. But we didn’t, did we?
