   The defendant describes in vivid detail the sexual acts he’d like to
   perform on the child,
   how he would groom the child, how he would get the child to the point of
   being willing to have sex with an adult.
   You have an admission.
   You have statements that I suggest would be helpful for the prosecution
   post Miranda.
   Child pornography was found both in his office as well a locked storage
   shed that was held in his name.
   And you know that this charge carries a minimum of ten years in prison
   up to life.
   You know he has no connections with Florida.
   He has the means to travel.
   Just six days before he traveled through Orlando for what he believed
   was a rendezvous with a 14 year old for sex, he purchased a plane
   ticket.
   He’s also an extreme danger to other people.
   He sought in this case to have sex with a minor and he did that over a
   course of several months,
   consistently through over 100 communications of every means, text
   message, chat logs, phone calls that were recorded, e—mails.
   He writes stories about having sex with minors.
   He says they’re based on true events, although not completely true.
   He stated to the undercover that he believed the age of consent for a
   minor boy was too high.
   And that a 14 year old would know what he’s doing.
   He also has copious amounts of child pornography that he was feeding his
   mind with, over a thousand images and
   videos and they haven’t even completed the forensic exam yet.

   He’s made statements about wrestling with juvenile boys at a nudist
   camp.
   His occupation is leveraged towards creating the opportunity for him to
   come in contact with minors:
   He’s a balloon entertainer.
   He’s leveraged his assets to place himself close to children, the same
   children that he fantasizes about violating.
   His mind apparently is completely overrun with this singular passion in
   his life, to have the most degrading sex he can imagine with a minor
   child.
   And that’s evidenced from the testimony you’ve heard today.
   He has two boys at home, many others who he would contact through his
   employment.
   The letters also indicate a relationship with the synagogue that would
   place him in contact with boys.

   It is very hard for me acknowledge that my dear son,
   Howard Scott Kalin, has done wrong‘ He has done wrong and l know that he is very sorry. I too am very sorry and sad. However, it is easy for me to write about Scott the person who has been the strength of our family, especially since his dad, my husband passed away 12 years ago. He has always been there to help me with my business and personal affairs and checking on my welfare. He’s been the dearest of sons — caring,
   concerned, devoted and one whom I leaned on.
   Scott’s been devoted to the rest of the family as well. He’s been a wonderful father, always there for his boys A involved in all their activities a good husband, a caring helpful brother, uncle, nephew and friend. A truly good person. The community also benefited from his entertainment talent by his donating time to synagogues, churches and other charitable organizations. And re: the community until this situation he’s been a model citizen. There‘s been no wrong-doing of any kind.
   In the last 5 years Scott has become quite depressed. With the poor economy. he lost his retail business, his entertainment agency made little, debts piled up and he could not find a job. This depression seems to have taken him to another world. It has been tragic for everyone.

   On June 26, 1992, I married Howard Scott Kalin after having dated him for4 years. I met Scott, which is
   the name he has used since college, on May 28, 1988 during our graduation from The University of
   Baltimore Law School. For as long as l have known Scott he has always been a law abiding citizen. He
   would never knowingly violate the law. He valued the fact that he was a lawyer and a member of the
   Maryland Bar. He was a fun loving man who would do anything to help his friends and family. He has
   always valued family. He has been an amazing father to our two sons, Cory and Josh. When our sons
   were young we both worked part time so that our children would only be in daycare two or three days a

   week. He was actively involved in all of their activities-school, sports and scouts. He was a devoted
   father and husband.

   When the police came to my home on Monday evening May 23’“ to search our home and informed me
   and my two teenage sons that my husband and their father had been arrested in Florida, I was in total
   shock and disbelief. It was made even worse when the arrest was publicized on the television and the
   local newspapers within an hour of the police invading my home. The newsmen came to our door
   looking for comments. The last seven months seem like a really had dream from which l can’t seem to
   awaken. My life as well as the lives of my two boys has changed dramatically. We are trying to
   understand how this happened. lam trying to create some normalcy in our lives again.

   l truly believe that Scott needs mental health treatment and counseling. Scott has suffered from
   depression for many years and would never agree to get counseling. He would not agree to take
   medication because he did not want to be medicated. When one of our sons was diagnosed with ADHD,
   Scott began to question if he too suffered from ADHD. His physician confirmed that Scott did in fact
   have ADHD. The diagnosis helped to explain why Scott had a hard time finding a job or running his own
   law practice I believe that at some point in the last year or two Scott lost his understanding of right and

   wrong as it pertains to sexual behavior. l know for a fact that he never touched our children in an
   inappropriate manner and l know in my heart that he never touched any child inappropriately.

   l understand that Scott committed a crime and that he must be incarcerated. As an attorney l
   understand that laws serve a purpose in our society and there must be consequences when they are
   broken. I believe that Scott used poor judgment due to his diminished mental state when he broke the
   law. Scott has no prior criminal history. He has been a productive member of society. Scott has been a
   good father and husband. l believe that in Scott’s case incarceration should be used for rehabilitation
   and not punishment. I therefore respectfully request that Scott be given the shortest sentence legally
   allowed and that he be placed in a minimum security correctional facility that

   1) will provide him with mental health treatment that he so desperately needs

   Z) is located close to Baltimore so that Scott’s family can visit with him and provide him the
   support necessary for rehabilitation.

   3) will allow Scott the opportunity to use his education and knowledge to help other people by
   teaching them to read , or write or some other skill. Scott needs to feel like he is a productive person.

   Perhaps he could develop a skill that he could use later when he is released.

   On August 8, 2019 at approximately 12:15, in the Counselor’s Office, I was searching
   property belonging to inmate Kalin, Howard #54969-018. This property had been submitted to me by
   inmate Kalin, who was present during the search, as a package mail-out. Kalin also began to address
   the boxes for mail-out through the U.S. Postal Service. During my search of the packages, I located
   the attached, 3/4 inch stack of papers containing numerous references to child erotica. In
   one example specifically a passage in the documents described a 12 year-old child performing oral
   sex on another male. The passages contain numerous other instances of child erotica and sexual
   acts on children. Kalin’s clear intent with providing me these materials to process them through
   the U.S. Postal Service for mailing.
