Who watches the watchmen?: NYPD 'gun play' edition

(Content Warning: Self-Harm)

27-year-old Carmine Simpson was a police officer with the NYPD in Brooklyn. He’s been arrested for allegedly using social media to solicit dozens of children for explicit images of themselves. And when I say explicit, I mean it with the full force of the definition of the word. We’re not just talking nude selfies here.

Simpson is said to have approached his underage victims on Twitter before moving the conversations to other platforms like Discord, TikTok, and Snapchat. He reportedly told his victims that he was into ‘gun play’. For those of you who may not know, gun play is when firearms are introduced into someone’s sexual activity. For example…

Simpson, 27, who was off-duty during his alleged crimes told one of the victims,“I literally want to hold a gun to a girls head and tell her ‘this better be the best orgasm of my life or I’ll blow your brains out,’” prosecutors said.

Keep in mind that his victims are between 13 and 16-years-old, and they number close to four dozen.

Simpson also allegedly encouraged his victims to commit self harm. This includes carving words into their flesh or choking themselves with a belt for Simpson’s enjoyment. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

While I’m far from a card-carrying member of the ACAB Club, I’m also not naive enough to think that there aren’t more creeper cops like this out there. Unfortunately, this seems to be just a symptom of a much larger disease. While police officers may be ‘just human’ they shouldn’t be able to use their positions to inflict inhuman suffering on others. In other words, cops need to be held to the highest of standards. If they can’t meet these standards, then they have no business in any police force.
